Patient Education is Key
Client education is a big part of what we do at North Powers Animal Hospital. In order for our clients to make the best decision for their pet – they need to have all the information. Our staff makes it their mission to ensure every client receives that information, and in a manner that is understandable. It might take us a bit longer to explain, but it is worth it to ensure our clients understand ALL of their options and why we recommend doing them. Should you have any questions about the options we have provided you with, feel free to call us to talk to either Dr. Welfare or Dr. Carlson.
Meet Our Staff
Russell Welfare, DVM
Dr. Welfare graduated from the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical School in 1995 and completed a surgical internship in 1996. He has practiced throughout the South, East and Central regions of the country, which has given him a unique perspective in caring for animals and their humans. He places a strong emphasis on education and prevention, and he believes that when animals come into the office they should be treated with respect and in a manner that decreases the stress they experience. In 2008 he came home to Colorado and started North Powers Animal Hospital. He loves what he does today as much as he did the first day he started practice.
Gwen Carlson, DVM
Dr. Carlson has been a practicing veterinarian since 1998 when she graduated from the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine. After a year internship at Colorado State University, she moved to Colorado Springs in 1999 and has been practicing veterinary medicine ever since.
In 2014, she made the excellent choice to join the team at North Powers Animal Hospital. She is a current member of the Colorado and American Veterinary Medical Associations and the Colorado Springs Area Veterinary Society. Because of cat allergies in her family, Dr. Carlson needs to get her "kitty fix" at work, so she too has a special interest in seeing feline patients for their wellness and special needs care. Dr. Carlson is a highly competent medical practitioner; however it is her compassion for her patients and her owners which shines above all. Dr. Carlson has a passion and enthusiasm for education and communication with all her clients that are so important for the overall well-being of her patients. At home, Dr. Carlson and her husband has two children, a standard poodle named "Alex", a wire-haired dachshund named "Petey", a hamster named "Pearl", and a freshwater tank full of cute little fish.
